For both boys and girls, the 1999 iteration of this mini-cruiser is most likely going to become a best friend: its low seat provides excellent ground contact at low speed or when stopped, while the bike ergonomics are comfortable and reassuring while riding.Light and nimble, the 1999 Virago 250 is great for commuting and small rides around the town, and can easily carry saddlebags, too.I did all the research and thought starting at a 250 was a good Idea but not so much now as I wanted something that I could ride for years to come.If you fancy a big cruiser later on, the Yamaha XV250S Virago is a great place to start: its got the looks and appears bigger than a 250, so you wont feel left out down at the Ace.
The Yamaha XV250S Viragos engines peachy and it doesnt suffer the wallow and bad handling many associate with cruisers. ![]() The Yamaha XV250S Viragos light weight makes for easy steering but get carried away and the pegs touch down early. Great for cruising in the midrange, it has to be revved harder to stay at the top end. Gentler riding on A and B roads is where the Yamaha XV250S Virago is most at home and theres more go in it than youd think. As for the finish, its universally regarded as top notch: well put together, plenty of shiny chrome and excellent paintwork. Many Yamaha XV250S Viragos are used as commuters and they still seem to survive pretty well, despite harsh winters. The main differences are in the styling and, whilst the Yamaha XV250S Virago boasts a V-twin, the Hondas a parallel number. Insurance and running costs bode well for the Yamaha: its a popular, budget choice for learners, new riders and commuters. The dash is simple, with analogue speedo and traditional trip but no rev counter. Mirrors are good but the headlight is quite poor and theres no storage space under the seat. Tyres can let it down and stability in the wets not much to write home about. Colour changes only until 2001, when it was replaced by the XVS250 Dragstar, which uses the same engine. Very nimble, easy to ride, fun at lower speeds, handles well in parking lots and town driving. I was the 3rd owner, and it will not have a 4th as I blew the engine. I put 1500 miles on it and it had 3 yes count them 3 oil changes during that time. I changed the oil as soon as I bought it, I had an oil leak and they had to replace a seal so it got an oil change, and it needed a new starter so it got its 3rd oil change. 2000 Yamaha Virago 250 Driver And GoingI was using it as my daily driver and going 55MPH-45MPH I live 10 miles from work. My mechanic said that was too much high speed for it and the engine could not handle it. It had 7500 miles on the clock, I replaced the starter and clutch cable.This was my first bike and I probably should have gone bigger. Very limited on after market add on, ride was comfortable, lots of plastic parts If I had to do it all over again I would not have bought a 250.
